Gothic Clothes and Styles

It comes as no suprise that goth clothes are typically made up of the color black. Although this seems to be the most widely used color in gothic fashion, jewel tone colors such as dark blue, red, deep purple, green and even gray have become more prominent in recent years as well. Just the same, many have used the color white to help add a new twist.

Gothic clothing is usually accented with silver or pewter chains, necklaces, rings or bracelets bearing symbols of the Wiccan culture, the Christian cross or Egyptian Ankhs.

While styles can range vastly from one goth person to another, most of the clothes are unique and are designed to make a statement.

Clothing ranges from the traditional dressy Victorian or Elizabethan style to the popular buckled and studded regalia (industrial) style. It also borrows from the elegant 19th century style of clothing which consists of antique laces and chiffon petticoats.

Many goths enjoy wearing undergarments such as striped or velvet tights, fishnets, spider lace tights, knee hi’s and novelty socks. PVC and vinyl items such as jackets, pants and corsets are popular within this subculture as well.

Traditional female clothing normally consists of wearing a skirt or dress and tight fitting pants with military style boots. Male goths frequently wear black suits with tight fitting or rugged style pants.

Goth clothes are mostly a tool for making yourself stand out from the crowd. The idea of expressing the self through clothing is key. Rejection of the mainstream and an emphasis on freedom of choice and expression sum up what gothic style is all about.

Just like the punk rock subculture in which goth emerged, the same “do-it-yourself” ethic applies towards clothing and accessories. Making one’s own clothing allows for maximum freedom of expression and enables one to be completely unique.

No matter what the occasion, there are many types of goth clothes available today. Many stores have recognized the demand for these items and have introduced their own lines of apparel accordingly.

Wedding gowns, prom dresses, tuxedos, costumes, plus sizes and business attire are just a few more recent options in goth fashion.

No Goth clothes are not worn with the intention of “sticking out from the crowd”. That is the whole point you are missing. None of us pay any attention to “the crowd” to even know were “sticking out”. What I wear makes me feel beautiful and is pleasing to my eye whether or not other people are wearing it or not doesnt matter. We know what we like when we see it without interference from trends, magazines, MTV, culture, societal rules and so on. Goths NEVER want to stand out from the crowd thats why most goth people tend to want to move to other areas that are more goth. If we were intending to stand out form the crowd with our clothes all of us would be flocking to Kansas or Ohio dont you think? I can assure you I do not give one thought to the outside world when I am getting dressed.

I totally agree. WHENEVER I GET DRESSED I HONESTLY COULD GIVE TWO ***** WHETHER OR NOT I’M BEING NOTICED. I WEAR WHAT I WEAR BECAUSE IT’S WHAT I LIKE, NOT BECAUSE I’M FOCUSED ON WHAT DIP****S ARE LOOKING. I COULD CARE LESS. I SECOND THE COMMENT ABOVE. BUT, 2 EACH HIS OWN.

I think to two previous comments misunderstood what a statement might be. For example, a statement is meant to get people to think about what they see. Sometimes forcing someone to take a second look is good simply because otherwise people loose track of the reality they live in. Oh, and by the way commenter #2, all the capitals and astricts do nothing for your argument. I would suggest more substance and less profanity.

When I get dressed I KNOW people are going to stare at me just because I wear black lipstick, or black combat boots. But its fun to see the stares. I never wore Areopoastale or Abercrombie EVER in my life because I think its for dumb people who give BJ’s when their freaking 12. So basicly, you should express yourself no matter what society thinks about you!!!
