The goth culture did not originate in the 1980s. The goth-rock culture originated around this time, but goth culture as an entirety is a collective culture of many Gothic sub-cultures. The original 'goth culture' was a religious group (Christian, not Satanist) that began in France and Germany around the same time period. The style of heavier coats and very plain, black garments came from Germany. On the other hand, the Goth le Faire style, or the 'goth lace' style originated in France. It was decades after these cultures came about, before the modern punk-goth culture came to be. Goth culture today is composed of all of these cultures, mixed with one's personal tastes.
BTW: Goth culture and emo culture are completely separate. Modern Goth erupted from punk/punk-goth culture. Emo, on the other hand, came from a suckish mix of grunge and alternative.
